Longhorn Caverns
Believe it or not, the Ice Age actually affected hot, humid Texas! Geologists believe
Longhorn Cavern, located six miles from Burnet, is at least a million years old. Theory has it that as glaciers receded from the northern part of the U.S., Texas became drier. Groundwater levels dropped, dissolving limestone in the process. Rivers located underneath the ground also helped carve out tunnels within the cavern.
The centerpiece of Longhorn Cavern State Park, the cavern has provided shelter for many over the years. Early inhabitants included the Comanche Indians, and Confederates produced gunpowder here. Another legend suggests that close to two million dollars was hidden here by the notorious Texas outlaw, Sam Bass.
Even if you don't find Bass' fortune, you're sure to see the natural treasure in this State Park. The beauty of the cavern itself is priceless, and its history is worth more than the gold said to be buried here.
