Fort Croghan
If you've ever watched an old cowboy flick and wondered about forts, why not visit a real one to get answers? Built in
1849, Fort Croghan was primarily used to protect settlers from
Indian attacks.
Because this land was originally leased from John Hamilton, the town of Burnet was named "Hamilton" at its' conception. As a result, the fort was sometimes referred to as Fort Hamilton, although its official namesake was career army officer George
Croghan.
Most of the soldiers at Fort Croghan moved out in 1853 as the army followed the movement of Texas' expanding frontier. The army completely abandoned the fort in 1855, but local pioneers and frontier guards continued to use the facility in its' fight against Indians.
Today the fort is full of period artifacts and log cabins. For a real step back in time, you'll want to schedule Fort Croghan into your plans!
